First of all, let’s find out about acai berries (pronounced ah-sah-ee). The acai berry is an inch-long, reddish-purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. Some studies show that acai fruit pulp is even richer in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries.
The main ingredients in an acai bowl are acai puree, granola, bananas and strawberries. A splash of orange juice or apple juice and a drizzle of honey is added to the top. You can simple customize your bowl with your favorite fruit or a different sweetener like maple syrup or agave nectar. You can also add different flavors of granola.
We thought we would try a basic acai bowl to start and then we made another version and added frozen blueberries.
1/2 cup apple juice or orange juice (unsweetened if desired)
2 packets of frozen Acai (I used Sambazon Original Smoothie Packs)
1 banana, frozen works great
1/2 cup low fat granola of choice
1 ripe banana, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup strawberries, sliced
handful of blueberries or other berries
Drizzle of honey, maple syrup or agave nectar (optional)
1. Slightly thaw the acai puree and blend together in a high speed blender with one banana. Add the juice (or water) and blend until smooth. Pour the puree into a bowl.
2. Top with granola, sliced strawberries and another banana
